Lesson 1: Definations Flashcards
Modern Periodic Law
Physical and chemical properties of elements are the periodic functions of their atomic number.
Periodicity
Periodicity in properties refers to the occurrence of characteristic properties of elements at definite intervals in the Modern Periodic Table.
Periodic properties
The properties that appear at regular intervals in the Modern Periodic Table are called periodic properties.
Atomic Radius
The atomic radius of an atom is the distance between the centre of the nucleus and the outermost shell of the atom.
Ionisation Potential
Ionisation potential is the amount of energy required to remove an electron from the outermost shell of an isolated gaseous atom.
Electron Affinity
Electron affinity is the amount of energy released when a gaseous atom accepts an electron to form an anion.
Electronegativity
Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to attract electron towards itself when combined in a compound.
Nuclear Charge
The nuclear charge of an atom is the positive charge on the nucleus of the atom.
Bridge Elements
Bridge elements are those elements of the second period that show similarities in properties diagonally with the elements of the next group of the third period.
