Lesson 1 computer basics Flashcards
what are the three main functions of a system?
processing, transferring and storing information
Types of information
Videos, words, numbers, sound
what is data made up of
binary digits 0 and 1s
what do 0 and 1 represent?
The state of the transistors on and off
can computers be built to suit a particular task?
Yes
what does the internet allow us to do?
Share information Further and quicker
what does a computer need to run?>
hardware software and a user
what does a computer do with data
takes what the user inputs and manipulates it
what hardware can be used outside of the case?
how is it connected?
Peripheral devices - via a USB or ports
what is the basic environment a PC needs
Operating system OS
what happens when data is input? FDE?
The information is stored in the RAM
the CPU fetches the data and processes it
it creates instructions telling other components what to do
it sends the instructions to the RAM
Input
a user will enter data via a peripheral
output
the processed data is shown to the user
networks
allows users to share data to other computers connected on the same network
RAM
non volatile memory which only stores data when electricity is moving through the computer
desktops
computer in a case which is for home and office and uses peripherals for input and output
what does the CPU control (limitations)
the overall speed of the computer
what does the RAM control (limitations)
the amount of apps opened and the amount of data is processed
what does the mass storage control (limitations)
The amount of data which is held when the computer is off
Servers
users connect to the server and it supports users on a network - allows them to access resources
server components
SAME as desktop - higher end components - more expensive - can have double the components for more reliability
laptops`
portable integrated screen connectivity input and output built in portable power source
what’s a hybrid
tablet which attaches to a keyboard which creates a laptop
OEM
original equipment manufacturer - sources components and puts them together as a desktop to sell
PDA
personal digital assistant - smartphone tablet etc
IOT
internet of things - many items within the home all joined in connectivity - eg appliances security and items connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth that are controlled via an app
computers in cars control?
brakes, navigation, acceleration, positioning, collision detect, parking assist and can even drive the car
UAV
unmanned automated vehicle - drones, aircrafts
medical devices
insulin pumps, monitors, defibrillators - they can automatically distribute insulin on a timer or monitor patience’s without constant assistance
consoles
same equipment as desktop, using controller instead of a keyboard, powerful GPU, Wi-Fi and BT connection, TV display or monitor
