Lesson 1 - Cells, tissues and organ systems Flashcards
What are the levels of organisation in the human body, in order from smallest to largest?
Cell → Tissue → Organ → Organ System → Organism
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells working together to perform a specific function.
What is the difference between an organ and an organ system?
An organ is a structure made of different tissues working together to perform a specific function, while an organ system is a group of organs working together to perform a larger function for the body.
Why is the cell considered the basic unit of life in the body?
Cells are the smallest units of life that carry out all the processes needed for the body to function.
What is the name of the organ system that breaks down larger food molecules into smaller, soluble ones?
The digestive system
What are the three types of tissues found in the stomach?
The stomach contains:
Muscular tissue
Glandular tissue
Epithelial tissue
What is the function of muscular tissue in the stomach?
Muscular tissue in the stomach contracts to churn food, mixing it with digestive juices for mechanical digestion.
What are the functions of glandular and epithelial tissues in the stomach?
Glandular tissue: Produces digestive enzymes and stomach acid to chemically digest food.
Epithelial tissue: Lines the stomach and protects it from the acid by producing mucus.
