Lesson 1 - Basic Terms Flashcards
Autotroph
Something that feeds on its own. For example, plants, and some self-feeding bacteria
Heterotroph
Something that feeds on other things
Herbivore
Eats ONLY plants
Carnivore
Eats ONLY meats
Omnivore
Eats both plants and meats
Nutrients
These are food components utilized by the body. There are six major classes of nutrients. They are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and water.
Physical Digestion
This is process where food breaks down into smaller pieces without the use of chemical process. For example, when you chew a piece of cheese in your mouth. This is a process of physical digestion.
Chemical Digestion
This the process where the food makes its way down to the stomach and gets digested even further by chemical process. For instance, by digestive enzymes and by absorption. These are all chemical reactions taking place and helps digest the food.
Minerals
These help with cellular processes. For example, some minerals include zinc, calcium (occurs in the bones and muscles), and potassium (occurs in the nerves)
Water
Blood pressure and transport. This molecule is a solvent, and its a medium for chemical reactions.
Vitamins
They help with chemical reactions. For example, some vitamins include vitamin A, B, D, E.
Enzymes
These are chemical processes which accelerate chemical reactions in the stomach when food is being digested.
