Lesson 1 Flashcards
Algebra Strategies
VITAC: Variables in the Answer Choices
PUT: Problems with Unknown Totals
VITAC
1) Choose easy # (‘s) to replace variable(s) (2,3,10) and write them down!
2) Plug my numbers into problem and solve (circle answer)
3) Plug my numbers into all 5 answer choices and find a match
PUT (Problems with Unknown Totals and Fractions or Percents in the Answer Choices)
Fractions: Multiply all denominators
Percentages: Use 100 (usually for the oldest number)
Quantitative Comparison Strategy
1) Simplify! Basically, never multiply or divide by anything negative or that could be negative
2) Eliminate D when there are no variables
3) QC Number Testing: Choose -10,-1,-1/2,0,1/2,1,10. Must try multiple Numbers. Try to get to D!
XConABQ
X: variable Con: Does it meet the condition(s) A: Value for Quantity A with our # B: Value for Quantity B with our # Q: Letter answer to the question
Percent Change
(Difference/Original)*100
Percent “Than” Question Strategy
1) Determine What/Who follows the word “Than”
2) Start with your “Than” number. Then perform the operation one the “Than” number: 20% greater than 12=12+(20/100)*12;
3) Simplify
X^2*X^3=
X^5
(X^2)^3=
X^6
(X/Y)^2=
(X^2)/(Y^2)
(X^5)/(X^3)=
X^2
X^-2=
1/(X^2)
X^(2/3)=
Cubed Root (^3) of (X^2)
X^0=
1
Square root of (x*y)
Square root of X * Square root of Y
