Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is the pacific ring of fire?
An arch around the pacific ocean where many volcanos or earthquakes are formed as it is the edges of plate boundaries
What is a hotspot?
A portion of the Earth’s service which experiences volcanism (eruption of magma onto the earths surface)
Where do earthquakes occur?
Where we have weaknesses in the ground
What happens when the plates move?
The crust cracks due to plates moving in different directions which creates fault lines
What occurs on fault lines?
earthquakes
Where is convection created?
In the mantel by heat radiating outwards from the inner core, heating the crust
What happens at low pressure?
Rock melts
What happens after magma forms at the base of the plate?
it rises through cracks in the plate and erupts on earths surface
What is formed when lava builds up?
a volcano
What does the volcano do to the plate?
Bend it
What does the plate do with volcanos?
carries volcanos away from hotspots and new volcanos build in their place.
What happens to the thermal plume when the plates move?
The moving plate drags it with it which explains why volcanos can erupt again
When can volcanos erupt?
only when heat plume is on them as it finds cracks which have weaknesses
When do plates move by frictional drag?
When matte convection cells make contact with the base of the crust
What has lead to the mathematical modelling of the mantle?
seismic waves travelling through the mantle which discovered hot and cold areas
