Lesson 1-6 (Quiz 1) Flashcards
What is Homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the tendency of organisms to maintain various physiological variables at a specific value known as set points.
what is a feedback loop?
A system of interactions in which the output either inhibits or amplifies the system.
What is a negative FBL?
It is thermoregulation as if we get too hot we try to cool it down.
What is positive FBL?
It is when the result is causing it to increase more (more panic level)
how do certain animals maintain homeostasis?
For example, dogs and birds maintain homeostasis by sticking their tongues out this helps cool them down when they get to warm.
Elephants maintain homeostasis by flapping their big ears which can reduce the temperature.
How does a leaf maintain homeostasis?
Leaves maintain homeostasis by the stomata which allow carbon dioxide to enter while water and oxygen exit through
What is thermoregulation?
Thermoregulation is a process that allows your body to maintain its core internal temperature.
What is an endotherm
endotherms are able to live in more extreme environments and need lots of food
what is an ectotherm
ectotherms eat less they are able to live in very cold and hot environments but they try to avoid heat since their metabolism is temperature dependant.
What is osmoregulation
osmoregulation is done through humans and mammals through the kidney filtering out the salt and water from the blood and getting rid of excess urine.
plants do it as well.
What is the hierarchy of life
cell - the basic unit of life.
tissue - specialized that works for a particular function.
organ - made up of diff tissues that have a function.
organ system - carry out specific functions.
organisms - carries out all functions of life.
what are the 7 functions of life in an organism
Metabolism - dogs have a higher metabolism than humans they breathe and pump blood faster.
homeostasis - dogs maintain homeostasis by sticking their tongues out to cool them down.
Growth - small dog breeds stop growing however big got breeds to tend to keep growing until they are 12 - 24 months old.
nutrition - proteins and fats, carbohydrates are one of the three major nutrients in food and a major source of energy for a dog’s body.
Excretion - dogs get rid of waste and toxins by being physically active moving around.
The structure of the respiratory system
- It is a way for oxygen to enter and carbon dioxide to exit.
Key organs
nasal cavity larynx trachea lungs bronchi bronchioles alveoli intercostal diaphragm
Key muscles
diaphragm
intercostal which are able to inc and dec the size of the thoracic activity.
