Q

how do certain animals maintain homeostasis?

A

For example, dogs and birds maintain homeostasis by sticking their tongues out this helps cool them down when they get to warm.
Elephants maintain homeostasis by flapping their big ears which can reduce the temperature.

Q

How does a leaf maintain homeostasis?

A

Leaves maintain homeostasis by the stomata which allow carbon dioxide to enter while water and oxygen exit through

Q

what is an ectotherm

A

ectotherms eat less they are able to live in very cold and hot environments but they try to avoid heat since their metabolism is temperature dependant.

Q

What is osmoregulation

A

osmoregulation is done through humans and mammals through the kidney filtering out the salt and water from the blood and getting rid of excess urine.
plants do it as well.

Q

What is the hierarchy of life

A

cell - the basic unit of life.
tissue - specialized that works for a particular function.
organ - made up of diff tissues that have a function.
organ system - carry out specific functions.

Q

what are the 7 functions of life in an organism

A

Metabolism - dogs have a higher metabolism than humans they breathe and pump blood faster.
homeostasis - dogs maintain homeostasis by sticking their tongues out to cool them down.
Growth - small dog breeds stop growing however big got breeds to tend to keep growing until they are 12 - 24 months old.
nutrition - proteins and fats, carbohydrates are one of the three major nutrients in food and a major source of energy for a dog’s body.
Excretion - dogs get rid of waste and toxins by being physically active moving around.

16
Q

emphysema

A

emphysema is a slowly progressing disease which turns healthy alveoli into an irregular structure with large holes those holes cause shortness of breath because those holes lose the gas exchange

17
Q

lung cancer

A

causes cells to divide in the lung and reduces an individual’s ability to breath, it is prone to spread in a person’s brain, bone, and liver.

  • the lung tissue will no longer be functional and will no longer do gas exchange
  • lung cancer is mainly caused by tobacco, pollution, and genetics.
18
Q

respiration in different animals

A
  • insects have structures called spiracles for gas exchange.
  • spiders have book lungs.
  • terrestrial animals have lungs similar to our own.
19
Q

similarities between human and fish respiratory system.

A
  • both humans and fishes breathe through lungs(gills) where oxygen enters and carbon dioxide exits.
20
Q

differences between human and fish respiratory system.

A
  • the fish’s gills are placed on the back of the mouth where humans have their lungs placed in the upper body.
