Lesson 1 Flashcards
oxygen
An element usually found with 2 oxygen atoms chemically combined.
Sentence: Oxygen is the air we breath.
glucose
A type of sugar produced in plants. A compound with 6 carbon, 12 hydrogen, and 6 oxygen atoms all chemically combined.
Sentence: Glucose is a type is sugar produced in plants.
Carbon dioxide
a compound with 1 carbon atom and 2 oxygen atoms chemically combined.
Sentence: Plants make carbon dioxide.
Water
a compound with 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom chemically combined.
Sentence: You can drink water in a glass.
ATP
a compound that stores energy in cells to be used later for daily activities.
Sentence: ATP stores energy in cells to be used later.
reactant
A substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction.
Sentence:
product
A substance formed as a result of a chemical reaction.
chlorophyll
Green pigment (color) in plants that absorbs light energy that is used in photosynthesis.
chemical equation
A short, easy way to show a chemical reaction, using symbols instead of words.
chloroplasts
The part of the plant cell where photosynthesis occurs.
mitochondria
Can be found in plants and animals. This is where cellular respiration takes place.
cellular respiration
Process that releases energy by breaking down glucose using oxygen.
Sentence:
cell
The smallest most basic part that makes up life.
Sentence: Cells are the smallest and basic pe to make up life.
consumer
An organism that eats other organisms (plant or animal).
Sentence: Plants or animals are consumers.
decomposer
