Lesson 1 Flashcards
Name the parts of the stem
Vascular cambium, pith (centre of stem), phloem (on outside), xylem (in pith, epidermis, cortex
Name the parts of a plant root
Root hair cells, epidermis, cell wall, plasmodesmata, cortex, endodermis, Casparian strip, pericycle
How does a plant draw water from soil into root hair cells?
Mineral ions such as nitrates, are actively transported into cells and water potential is lowered so water enters via osmosis
What is the apoplast pathway?
Water moves through the cortex due to cohesion via cell walls after being taken up by root hair cells
What is the symplast pathway?
Water moves through cytoplasm in plasmodesmata by osmosis between cells
What is the vacuolar pathway?
Water moves through cytoplasm and vacuoles
