lesson 1 Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that possesses mass and occupies space, such as air, water, rocks, and ourselves.
What are the key characteristics of solids?
Particles are tightly packed, held together by strong forces, have a fixed shape and volume, and vibrate in place.
What are the key characteristics of liquids?
Particles are close together but can slide past each other, allowing them to flow. Liquids take the shape of their container and have a fixed volume.
What are the key characteristics of gases?
Particles are far apart with lots of space between them. Gases expand to fill the shape and volume of their container.
What is plasma?
Plasma is a state of matter consisting of electrically charged gas with ionized particles that carry a charge, including free electrons.
What is Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC)?
A state of matter occurring at temperatures approaching absolute zero, where particles function as a single entity (super-atom). It was theorized by Albert Einstein and Satyendra Nath Bose.
What is melting?
The process of changing from a solid to a liquid.
What is freezing?
The process of changing from a liquid to a solid.
What is evaporation?
The process of changing from a liquid to a gas.
What is condensation?
The process of changing from a gas to a liquid.
What is sublimation?
The process of changing from a solid directly to a gas without becoming a liquid.
