Perceived freedom – embarks on experience at will and able to leave it at will.
Autotelic nature – having a purpose that is done through self-motivation and not because of external factors
Beneficial outcome – one undertakes the activity on the assumption that doing so will yield some type of benefit

Know the difference between memory learning, factual learning, and attitude and value learning.
Memory learning: participation in some leisure activity that has been shown to improve recall and recognition memory. Memory of learning directions, rules, techniques and strategies is required for later participation in and enjoyment of activities.
Factual learning: Gaining useful knowledge while engaging in leisure pursuits such as traveling, art galleries and museums, etc…
Attitude and value learning: the acquisition of new knowledge leads to the development of new positive attitudes and values. Ex: camping, new value and attitude towards the outdoors.
Define the term “spiritual” in reference to leisure
Greater appreciation for the wonders of nature
An expanded social consciousness – ex. Environment
A sense of well being
Know the demographic values of leisure (age, gender, occupation, and residence)
Age: Over the course of a lifetime people may lose interests in some leisure activities and become more interested in others. When people get married and have children they tend to abandon doing things with friends and devote more free time to family outings.
Gender: Boys and Girls play patterns differ and so do men’s and women’s. Despite many improvements for women throughout the years, they devote less time to leisure because of work and domestic responsibilities. This is true in the U.S. and abroad.
Occupation: A correlation has been identified between one’s occupation and the kinds of leisure pursuits they undertake and the time that they devote to leisure. Studies show that higher pay professional occupations engage in a greater variety of leisure pursuits that their counterpart. Professionals have more money to spend and in the course of their education they are have more exposure to different interest.
Residence: People’s opportunities for and choices of leisure pursuits depend on their geographic location. Studies show that people who live in urban areas participate more in recreational activities than rural residents do.

Know the four developmental stages of childhood.

Play can be a means of self expression and can also be an indicator of emotional and social adjustment.
Children should be building self confidence and self esteem; this can be done through play.
Early childhood
Children grow faster during this stage than any other time of their life.
They become more mobile, verbal and independent.
This is the sensory-motor stage during which they learn to deal with objects, time and space on a concrete basis.
Preschool
They develop an awareness of gender differences and of relationships with others.
They learn more about their physical abilities and enhance their problem solving skills.
They enjoy handling objects, eye hand coordination exercise, creative opportunities and sensory experiences.
Middle childhood
This stage is marked by slower growth and allows children to engage in activities without the energy draining changes that result from rapid physical growth.
Physical differences between the sexes are minimal during this stage.
They continue to master more complex motor skills and to improve fine motor skills.
Cooperative play develops into competitive play through small group activity.
In all development stages of children, you will find that children use play to develop and improve their physical skills and to gain peer acceptance.
Know information on playground safety
Playground safety should be at the forefront however, there are lots of playgrounds that are still in operation that are outdated and dangerous. Liability becomes a huge issue for providers.
A set of rules can help prevent accidents
Have an established crisis management procedure.
In the past few years, increases in both lawsuits and insurance rates have caused many municipalities to shut down playgrounds altogether
