Lesbian Sexuality Flashcards
Sister Benedetta Carlini (1591–1661)
An Italian nun and mystic who became abbess of the Convent of the Mother of God in Pescia. She claimed to have visions and mystical experiences, including stigmata, but was later investigated for her unorthodox behavior and sexual relations with another nun. Her story is one of controversy surrounding religious ecstasy, same-sex desire, and the church’s response to such transgressions in the 17th century.
