Ils/Elles payent/paient

Verbs en -ayer have 2 possible forms.
Nous and vous retain the stem, the others can have either y or i.
This is true in the present/future/subjunctive/conditionnel and tu form of imperative.
Obviously the imparfait is derived from the nous form so has a ‘y’
Passé composé avoir payé

Verbes en-oyer must change to an 'i' except the nous/vous forms in the present and subjonctif 
The 'i' is used in the present, future, subjunctive (not nous/vous), conditional and tu form of imperative.
The imparfait uses the 'y'.
Passé compose is avoir -yé
