Direct object pronouns

le, la, l’, les

  • can refer to persons or things
  • immediately precede the conjugated form of the verbe

Special uses of the pronoun “le”

A

1) Le can be used to replace a complete idea
Example:
Croyez-vous qu’il arrive ce soir?
Oui, je le crois (yes, I think so)

2) Le can also replace an adjective (does not change regardless or gender and number of adjectives it replaces)
Example:
Je suis heureux et ils le sont aussi
(I am happy and they are too)

Il est moins intelligent que je ne le pensais
He was more intelligent than I thought he was

Direct and indirect object pronouns

A

me, te, vous, nous

These can be both direct and indirect object pronouns

Direct: Il me voit (he sees me)
Indirect: Il me parle (he speaks to me)

A

lui, leur
to him or her / to them

  • these refer only to people
  • there is no gender differentiation

Je parle à Pierre (I speak to Pierre)
Je lui parle (I speak to him)

Le pronom “y”

A

1) The pronoun “y” can replace a prepositional phrase (location)
- only if the preposition is NOT “de”
- and only if the object of the preposition is a thing
- when “y” replaces a phrase telling the name of a place, it means ‘there’

Je vais à la gare
J’y vais

Elle met l’argent sur la table
Elle y met l’argent

2) à + chose
Il répond à la lettre
Il y répond

Il obéit aux lois
Il y obéit

Le pronom “en”

A
  • The pronoun “en” replaces a prepositional phrase introduced by “de”
  • it means “of it, of them, from it, from them, from there, some, any”

Uses:
1) in a prepositional sense
Nous venons de New York (we come from NY)
Nous en venons (we come from there)

2) In a partitive sense
J’ai du pain
J’en ai

3) with expressions followed by “de”
Elle parle de ce livre
Elle en parle

Elle est fière de sa robe
Elle en est fière

4) with expressions of quantity
Elle a trop de livres
Elle en a trop

Elle a dix livres
Elle en a dix

Elle a plusieurs CD
Elle en a plusieurs

J’ai quelques livres
J’en ai quelques-uns
