Q

How are electron neutrinos and muon neutrinos distinguished in Cherenkov detectors?

A

Produced electrons bounce around & produce fuzzy rings. Produced muons move straight through the medium & produce clear rings.

Q

What is the ratio of electron to muon neutrinos created in the upper-atmosphere and the ratio of matter to anti-matter.

A

There are electron 1:2 muon neutrinos created, and equal matter & anti-matter neutrinos.

Draw the graph that shows the Z to qq* that shows that we have only three light neutrino flavours.

A
17
Q

How do cosmological & astrophysical obervations constrain neutrino masses?

A

The CMB power spectrum limits the sum of all masses to 0.13 eV, but cannot distinguish flavours. We can also use large scale structures (similar to dark matter) & supernova detections.

18
Q

What detectors do we use to detect neutrinos?

A
  • Trackers Layers with heavy targets & scintillators
  • Liquid Scintillators Good for low neutrino energies, looks for IBD. We can see photons & charged particles cause scintillation, as well as Cherenkov.
  • Water Cherenkov Heavy water & PMTs let us distinguish between different particles by the rings they make.
19
Q

What is the graph that DUNE saw neutrino CPV with?

A
