Leonardo da Vinci Flashcards
Annunciation
1470, now in Uffizi Gallery/Florence.
Patron unknown, found in monastery 1867 outside of Florence. Not documented until much later.
Careful drapery, silhouettes heads against dark backgrounds. Misty landscape, intensifying atmospheric detail
Baptism of Christ
Style of left angel is telling of later works/idealization
Softly painted
Drapery/chiro sciro
Worked with oil, Verrochio with tempurah
Last Supper
Milan, 1495-97
Patron: Duke of Milan
Different from earlier examples of the last supper, more animated apostles. Viewed from back of the space, to be seen as visionary or projection. Judas only apostle to have face in shadow, knocking over the salt and reaching for the bread. Apostles form small circular groups around the triangular form of Christ. Not true fresco, worked too erratically/tempurah and oil.
Mona Lisa
1503, Florence. Now in Louvre, Paris
Patron Francesco del Giocondo, husband of Mona Lisa
Mysterious smile, soft features. Idealized face and physique. Mystery matching in portrait and landscape. Eyes the window to the soul.
Addition of exotic clothing and accessories, removal of wedding ring when Medici became interested in the portrait
Virgin and Child with Saint Anne
1508-10, Florence. Now in Louvre, Paris
No lines, mysterious wild naturalistic landscape
Human message of sacrifice, motherly restraint. Saint Anne restraining Mary.
Freudian theories in underlying motherly figures, Leonardo having three of them during youth and those figures playing roles in his art
