lenses Flashcards
what is the focal point
where all the horizontal rays meet after passing through the lens
what is the focal length
distance between lens and focal point
what happens when the focal length is shorter (possible due to lens being thicker)
the power is greater
what do concave lenses do
spreads light outwards - can correct short sightedness
what do convex lenses do
focuses light inwards - used in magnifying glasses, binoculars, and to correct long sightedness as it focuses rays closer together
where is a real image produced
at the opposite side of the lens to the object
where a virtual images produced
from the same side of the lens to the object (when the object is closer to the lens than focal point)
what is the image produced if the objects is more than 2x focal length
diminished, inverted, real
what is the image produced if object is closer than 1 focal length from lens
magnified, upright, virtual
what is the image produced if the object is 1 and 2 focal lengths away from lens
magnified, inverted, real
