lennie quotations Flashcards
How is Lennie described in the book ?
“large, pale eyes… wide sloping shoulder”
When Lennie is described as having “large pale eyes” with “wide sloping shoulder” what does this bring the reader to believe about his physical appearance?
he has a pre evolution figure, he’s bigger than the usual ranch worker- a work machine, brutish
Steinbeck describes his appearance once again “ A bear drags his paws” what does this illustrate to readers?
This shows how large and fearsome Lennie looks. except he is harmless more like a teddy “bear” who doesn’t know how to wield his power.
George mentions their American dream and Lennie says “We could live offa fat of the land” What is the metaphor within this quote
FAT - the land isn’t really fat it just beholds a lot of profitable vegetation for them to farm and live off.
What is revealed about Lennie’s mindset when he says “ we could live offa fat of the land”
This quote illustrates his child-like fascination with their dream. Lennie doesn’t understand the complexities that go with running a farm/ranch . this highlights his childish naivety.
” I got you to look after me and you got me to look after you” what is significant about this quote with George and Lennie’s relationship?
This shows how fortunate Lennie and George are to have each other; unlike other ranch men who live sad and solitary lives. George and Lennie have a strong brotherhood
When Lennie is left alone on the ranch on the Saturday night of the novella where the other men have left to go to the whore house, he meets crooks and says “why ain’t you wanted” what does this show about Lennie’s childlikeness?
like a child Lennie doesn’t see colour in people (Crooks); he doesn’t understand racial separation. This confuses crooks as he knows he should be separated due to his skin colour.
when Lennie says “ Why ain’t you wanted” what does this question bring the reader to realise about his mindset
Lennie is showing how simple minded he is by asking foolish questions.
How does Steinbeck use Lennie to show how stupid racism is, for example “why ain’t you wanted?”
Steinbeck is using Lennie to question how stupid segregation is based on someones skin colour- Lennie doesn’t understand as he doesn’t see the difference that the other ranch men do.
When Lennie kills Curley’s wife on the afternoon of Sunday night he says to George “i thought you was mad at me” whats difference in pronouns to the way Lennie previously spoke to George?
instead of referring to himself and George with collective pronouns such as “us” or “We’re”. He says “you” and “me” which indicates the sudden separation between them; now it’s you vs me. This shows that they will be permanently separated from now on as Lennie gets shot.
How is Lennie described as gentle and harmless?
1) “smiled happily”
2) “broke into a delighted smile”
3) “looked timidly”
“Lennie Small”
Ironic ; lennie is massive twust
What is the significance of Lennie picking up a card and saying “both ends the same”
It takes us back to the beginning of their journey to the ranch and this is circular narrative which foregrounds the idea of a typical situation and that the dream will not come true because it is somehow “set in stone” that the workers cannot end up in a better situation at the end of the novel than they were in before the novel.
A certain animal is found in Lennies pocket at the very beggining of the book … what could be said about this animal
The animal is a mouse and is pratically lennies destiny in his pocket = a symbol of inevitable doom. circular narritave the book ends with death and begins with death .
What does the name Lennie mean ? (Leonard)
Ieonard means ‘Strong as a lion’ except lennie is blessed with childish guile
