Lennie Flashcards
“flopped like a fish”
“flopping like a fish on a line”
simile, hes broken bones, he doesn’t realise his own strength.
Curley’s hand flopping like a fish foreshadows his wife’s death
‘were gonna get a little place’
they have a dream+plans+aspirations for the future, which contrasts to living in the great depression.
‘I’ve got you and you’ve got me’
they have each other unlike everyone else, George gets him to work. which contrasts to itinerate workers who usually would travel by themselves and don’t understand concept of companionship.
‘found it dead’
he doesn’t actually realise he killed himself , he doesn’t realise his own strength, because of his childlike mentality.
Lennie allows Steinbeck to explore the theme of violence
‘i’m gonna get him’
Curley’s wife has just died and the first thing he wants to do is to go kill Lennie, he doesn’t want to stay with his wife and grieve and mourn her death. shows the hostility of the attitude in the 1930
‘salina river’
‘salina river’
the novel starts and ends in the same place, this cyclical structure shows that itinerate workers like Lennie and George will never be able to escape the viscous cycle, to achieve their dreams
‘everybody gonna be nice to me’
this will never happen to Lennie until he is in heaven and people with a mental disability at the time.
he is a character whom others confess, allowing development of a character to gain different perspective. ‘ i aint told told this to nobody’
she knows hes not going to tell anyone because hes not even to listening, she just wants someone to talk to because shes lonely. because shes only allowed to talk to her husband. because at the time husbands were controlling and possessive.
