What was Russia’s economy like before 1917?
It was far less industrialised than other western countries. Made of predominantly peasants working in agriculture.
What was state capitalism designed to do?
Designed to strengthen state control over the economy
Why was state capitalism needed?
Due to the underdeveloped industrial sector state capitalism was needed as a period of transition
What did state capitalism consist of?
The coexistence of capitalist industries, small scale peasant landholdings wig a soviet state and workers kontrol. Led by the Vesenkha who nationalised large industries. Small industries were either managed by the workers or handed back to capitalists.
When did war communism start and end?
March 1918 - March 1921

Designed to allow higher production of war goods and make food production more efficient.

Banning of private trade Nationalisation of businesses Grain requisitioning Food rationing Labour discipline Elimination of money

The dire state of the economy and the civil war. Ideologically they back-pedalled
