Leisure
Any freely chosen activity or experience that takes place in non-work time. Includes sport, leisure and recreation
Recreation
A leisure-time activity undertaken voluntarily and for enjoyment. it includes individual pursuits, organized outings and events, and non-paid (non-professional) sports
Sport
A physical activity involving events and competitions at the national and international scale with professional participants
Tourism
Travel away from home for a least one night for the purpose of leisure. this excludes day-trippers, even if international
Sustainable tourism
Conserves primary tourist resources and supports the livelihood and culture of local people
Niche tourism
Tourism that caters to a small group of tourists, often those intolerant of crowds. often centered around sustainability rather than mass tourism
Ecotourism
A ‘green’ and ‘alternative’ form of tourism that aims to preserve the environment by managing it responsibly and sustainably.
Primary tourist resources
The pre-existing attractions for tourism or recreation (those not built specifically for tourism), including climate, scenery, wildlife, indigenous people, culture and heritage sites
Secondary tourist recourses
Include accommodation, catering, entertainment and shopping - built for tourists in mind
Carrying capacity
The maximum number of visitors/participants that a site/event can satisfy at one time
Environmental carrying capacity
The maximum number before the local environment becomes damaged
Perceptual carrying capacity
The maximum number before a specific group of visitors consider the level of impact, such as noise, to be excessive
Thanatourism
Dark tourism, focused on events such as war, disasters, massacres where people have died. Sometimes called grief tourism
Staycation
Holidays in hometown, but taking part in tourist activities
Honey-pot or Hotspot
Location to which tourists are attracted, often causing environmental damage due to numbers exceeding the carrying capacity
Range
How far people will travel for a service, good or function
Sphere of influence
Area served by a service, good or function
Threshold population
Amount of people needed to keep a service or function open
Leisure hierarchy
Model that shows ranking of leisure facilities based on size, threshold and/or location
Peak Land Value Intersection (PLVI)
Where two or more interact, land values will be at their highest
Brownfield sites
Run down area within the city; once developed but are now derelict
Rural-urban fringe
Areas where the city meets the countryside
Central Business District (CBD)
Central area of a city where most business takes place
Urban regeneration
Improving the run down areas of a city through investment in infrastructure, housing and business opportunities
Heritage tourism
Focused on UNESCO sites, protected and historical sites
Adventure tourism
Involves a real or perceived risk visiting remote areas, or taking part in more risky physical activities
Multiplier effect
Initial amount of spending causes more money to circulate in the economy
Leakage
Money that leaves a country or business and goes to another country
Pro-poor tourism
Tourism that results in benefits for poor people
Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
Isolated small islands that have struggled to find economic prosperity
Diaspora
A population of a country who have migrated abroad and keep strong identity ties with the homeland
Mass tourism
Tourism that involves large number of people, often descending on one location during a small-time frame
Movie tourism
Visits to the location that films were set
VFR
Refers to ‘Visiting friends and relatives’
UNESCO
UN branch responsible for the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage sites
