What was working life/leisure like in the 1950s?

A

15 hours work - this covered household bills.
There was little DISPOSABLE INCOME (money left over after bills, rent and food)
Just two weeks from work each year.
Less than 2% of people holidayed abroad.
Rise of holiday camps eg Butlins.
Started to see a rise in popularity of TV - helped by Queen Jubilee 1953.
Radio also popular - 10 million radio licenses issued in 1950.

What were the problems in the 50s?

A

Work 40 minutes longer per day and had two weeks less paid holiday time per year.
Women had to spend 30 minutes longer on housework.

How did things start to change?

A

Working day often shorter than in the 1950s, there was more disposable income.
Caravanning holidays started to take over.
People started to go on holidays abroad.
1979 - workers had 4 weeks holiday off per year.
