Lehrer and Paxson Flashcards
What is Lehrer and Paxson’s analysis?
NO-DEFEATER
What two kinds of knowledge do Lehrer and Paxson divide knowledge into?
BASIC and NON-BASIC knowledge
What is BASIC knowledge?
Self-evident awareness you have
ex: when you know that you have a headache
What do Lehrer and Paxson analyze BASIC knowledge as?
true belief for which the complete justification is independent of any justifying statement
What type of knowledge generates trouble in Gettier Cases?
NON-BASIC knowledge
What does NON-BASIC knowledge have?
undefeated justified true belief
What is a defeater?
If you knew it you would no longer be justified
What can stop you from having knowledge?
undefeated defeater
Which of the following best sums up Lehrer & Paxson’s position?
Some of our knowledge is basic, and the rest of our knowledge is undefeated completely justified by true belief.
In the story on p.229, S believes that someone in his class owns a Ford, because Mr Nogot (who does not have a Ford) is very good at pretending he owns a Ford, and has fooled S on this point. It is actually true that someone in S’s class owns a Ford because Mr. Havit (also in the class) owns a Ford (secretly). What is the “defeater” for S’s true belief that someone in his class owns a Ford?
Mr. Nogot does not in fact own a Ford.
What do Lehrer and Paxson mean by “nonbasic knowledge”?
The knowledge that depends on some justifying evidence.
