First legislative process
First reading - no debate or vote takes place here
Second legislative process
Second reading, debate takes place
Third stage legislative process
The committee stage - 16-50 mps consider the clause, amendments can be made
Fourth stage legislative process
The report stage - report their discussions and amendments to the house
Fifth stage legislative process
The third reading - another general debate will take place, another vote may take place
sixth stage of legislative process
The other house - the same process must happen again but in the other house
final stage legislative process
royals assent - the act will come into force on midnight the day it is assigned, if not otherwise stated.
advantages
• lots of opportunity for checks and debate
• laws are made by elected mps
• different laws are made in different ways
disadvantages
• whole process can take months
• the house of lords aren’t elected (un democratic)
