What is the Animal Welfare Act 2006?
An act to make provisions for animal welfare
What animals does the Animal Welfare Act 2006 apply to?

Who is responsible for an animal?
Its owner- as long as they are over 16 years old
What does section 3 of the animal welfare act specify?
Adults have a legal responsibility for animals in their care and animals must not be sold to anyone under 16
What does section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 specify?
Enforcement can be taken where an animal is likely to undergo suffering in the future
What does the Protection of Animals Act 1911 enforce?
It is an offence to cause unnecessary physical or mental suffering to an animal
What does section 6 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 specify?
Removal of any part/whole dogs tail is an offence unless they are a working dog under 5 days old
What does section 5 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 specify?
unless during medical treatment, procedures that interfere with sensitive tissue and bone structure of the animal are prohibited

Any person who is responsible for an animal must meet its 5 needs
What are the 5 animal needs?
Suitable environment, suitable diet, ability to express natural behaviour, housed with/without others, protection from pain suffering and disease

improvement notices may be given to anyone failing to meet section 9

5 years

dogs must wear a collar with owners information in public
What are the microchipping of dogs regulations (2015)?
All dogs >8 weeks old must be microchipped and from 10th June 2024 all cats >20 weeks must be microchipped
What does the road traffic act 1988 state?
Dogs must be held on a lead on roads and any drivers who injure a dog must give their name and address or report to the police within 24 hours
What is the anti social behaviour, crime and policing act 2014?
it reduces irresponsible dog ownership by keeping dogs on a short lead, clearing up after them, limiting number of dogs walked at once and stopping dogs from accessing certain places
