Legislation Flashcards
1
Q
what is ionising radiation?
A
Ionizing radiation is radiation with enough energy so that during an interaction with an atom, it can remove tightly bound electrons from the orbit of an atom, causing the atom to become charged or ionized.
2
Q
is ionising radiation dangerous?
A
it can be- xrays and gamma rays etc can cause DNA damage due to generation of free radicals and direct interaction with DNA
3
Q
what are the effects of ionising radiation?
A
cataracts, sterility, cancer induction, genetic effects, radiation burns, radiation induced tumors
4
Q
why do we worry about dental radiography dose when its so low?
A
- even though the dose is low, the volume is high
- individual dose is low but population does is high
5
Q
What are the radiation doses?
A
- background dose in the UK= 2.5mSv
- OPG= approx 0.02mSv
- single PA= approx 0.001mSv
