Legionella pneumophila Flashcards
1
Q
Pathogen
A
- G- rod
- obigative anerobe
- not easily stained
- Intracellular pathogen (mimicry)
- Mobile
- Two phases:
1) . Infectious phase (entrance & death) –> has flagella
2) . Repicative (w/in cell) —> no flagella
2
Q
Encounter
A
fresh water or soil
intcl pararsite of 13 & 2 ciliated protozoa
3
Q
Entry
A
- inhalation of aerosole contam. water
4
Q
Spread
A
- point source spread
- NO person —> person
5
Q
Multiplication
A
- colonizes aveolar macrophages
6
Q
Damage
A
- Pneumonia —-> host inflam response
- eldery & immunocompromised
7
Q
DX
A
- urine Ag test
- culture sputum (specialized media)
8
Q
TX
A
- Antibiotics: macrolides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones
9
Q
PV
A
- moniter water system
10
Q
Mechinism of Evasion
A
- Type IV secretion system releases effector protiens:
- recruits vesicles from mitochondria & ER, bacteria becomes “self”-recognized
- also prevents fusion with the lysosome
- Feeds off materials need for cyctoplasm
- LCV uses all of cells resource then kills cell
11
Q
Virulence Factors:
Type IV Secretion System
A
- secrets effector protiens
- requires all 26 genes for function
- -1 gene —-> no intcl growth
- AKA: Dot/Icm
12
Q
Virulence Factors:
Effector Proteins
A
- ~100 secrected via T4SS
- 20 varifible by immunoflourecent microscopy
- 80 predicted via bioinformatic analysis
- vary widley in fuction
- some host specific
- deletion of single factor = no effect on intcl growth
