Unlawful touching of another person without his consent with or without resultant injury
Bias
a preference that inhibits impartial judgement
Civil Law
A lawsuit between 2 individuals; broken contract or confidences
Consent
Permission granted by a person voluntarily and in his right ming
Crime
An illegal act against society
Criminal Law
Defines legal obligations between the individual citizen and the state
Duty of care
Legal obligation of health care professionals to perform according to the standards of practice expected in their community for a comparable worker
Ethics
A code of conduct for a specific group representing ideal behavior
False Imprisonment
Holding or detaining a person against their will
Felony
Federal crime (a serious crime!)
Informed Consent
Permission granted by a person mentally competent who voluntarily gives consent for treatment
Liable (note the spelling!!)
Legally vulnerable
Libel (note the spelling)
Untrue written statement that damages another person’s reputation

A legal document that explains what medical treatment a person wants or does not want i they are unable to make those decisions themselves
Malpractice
“Bad practice”
Providing care for which you have not been trained which results in an injury to the patient or professional care that has led to an injury

Less serious crime
Negligence
Failure to perform in a reasonable prudent manner (care that you should have done) that leads to an injury or condition
Policy Manual
A manual that explains a facility’s rules and regulations Ex: No smoking
Procedure Manual
A manual that explains step-by-step instructions for performing tasks Ex: How to insert a catheter or how to insert and IV
Reasonable care
The health care worker is protected by law if it can be determined that he/she acted reasonably as compared with fellow workers
Slander
Untrue spoken statements which damages another’s reputation
Will
A legal document that defines disposition of property and takes effect after death
