What is a PO medicine ?
A product that is liscensed as a GSL but the manufacturer wishes to restrict sale through pharmacies only.
Eg: 30 sachet pack fybogel
Can a GSL be sold if there is no RP ?
Can a GSL be sold in the 2 hour time of absence ?
- No it cannot be sold UNTIL the pharmacist has LOGGED IN WITH the role of RP.
- The pharmacist can be physically absent for a limited amount of time whilst remaining responsible. So you can sell GSL during this period.
- So you can basically only sell GSL when the pharmacist has logged in as RP. If they leave in 2 hr period GSL can still be sold.
What is a P medicine?
A medicinal product that can be sold from a registered pharmacy - by a PHARMACIST or a PERSON ACTING UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A PHARMACIST.
Patient SHOULD NOT self select P medicines
P + GSL = OTC or Non prescribed medications
What is a POM?
A medicine that is generally subject to the restriction of requiring a prescription written by an appropriate prescriber.
What are appropriate POM prescribers?
- Doctor
- Dentist
- Supplementary prescriber
- Nurse independent prescriber
- Pharmacist independent prescriber
- EEA and Swiss doctors and dentists
- Optometrist
- Podiatrist
- Physiotherapist
- Therapeutic radiographer IP
What are pseudoephedrine and ephedrine used for?
Decongestant medicines
It is ILLEGAL to see what mg of pseudoephedrine or ephedrine without a prescription ?
CANT SELL more than 720mg of pseudoephedrine OR 180mg of ephedrine at any one time WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION.
Why are there restrictions on pseudoephedrine and ephedrine? What can it make ?
Class A - methylamphetamine (Crystal meth)
Who should make sale or supply or pseudoephedrine or ephedrine ?
- Made personally by the pharmacist or by pharmacy staff who have been trained and are competent to deal with pseudoephedrine or ephedrine- and they should know when to refer to the pharmacist.
Even when a request is made for a lawful quantity, the sale or supply can be refused where there are reasonable grounds for suspecting misuse.
A person purchasing pseudoephedrine and ephedrine for illicit purposes may not be a user and may not conform to the stereotypes.

Yes , they can to a patient requesting it at a pharmacy.
The patient should be assessed to ensure that they are competent and they intend to use the medication appropriately.
What should be done if EHC affects your moral beliefs ?
- Inform your employer
- Your locum agency
- Colleagues you will be working with, as soon as possible.
Can you give Ulipristal acetate to under 16’s ?
- Yes you can IT IS NOT contraindicated.
- Take into account under 13 are too young to consent to any sexual activity. Instances should be treated seriously with a presumption that the case should be reported to social services.
- Unless there are exception circumstances backed by documented reason for not sharing information.
Sexual activity with children under 16 is also an offence buy may be consensual.
It is not intended to prosecute mutually agreed sexual activity between young people of a similar age - unless it involves abuse or exploitation.
Pharmacists can provide contraception or sexual health advice to a child under the age of 16.

No, there is no limit on paracetamol and aspirin effervescent tablets , powders or granules that be sold to any one person at one time.
What is the indication for codeine and dihydrocodeine ?
Short term treatment of acute , moderate pain that is not relieved by paracetamol , ibuprofen of aspirin alone.
You cannot use for cold , flu, cough, sore throat and minor pain.
What size of codeine/dihydrocodeine is a Pom ?
Any pack size greater than 32 dose units including effervescent.
Can only sell one pack
What 3 warnings for codeine should be on the front of pack ?
Can cause addiction , for 3 days use only.
The PIL and packaging must state indication and that the medicine can cause addiction and overuse headache is used for >3 days.
PIL may contains warning signs of addiction.
What are reclassified medicines?
Medicines that have moved from a POM to P.
Providing pharmacists with a larger range of medicines to select from to treat patients.
