What are the first two things that you need to outline when doing legal research?
- Find the client’s objectives
- Narrow these down to search terms.
What three questions must you answer in the Introduction?
- Who is the client?
- What are the key facts?
- What do they need advice on?
How you should format your Findings section?
Use headings
What is the main focus in the Findings section?
Giving a summary of legislative framework.
How much case law do you need to include?
1 or 2, or none if not easily found.
How specific do you need to be with legislation?
You must use specific references to sections etc.
What format should you follow when talking about legislation?
- Reference the section
- Explain the law
- Apply the law to the client’s situation
What should the Conclusion do?
It should be a summing up.
What two things must be covered in the Conclusion?
- A summary of how the law applies to the client
- Any next steps

What 3 things do you need to give per reference?
- Name of source
- Web link
- Evaluation of reliability
When evaluating reliability, what two things must you speak about?
- Authorship (are they reliable?)
- Date (is the info still reliable?)
What is a good evaluation of a reference for an Act?
Government website where all legislation is accurate and regularly updated.
