What are the main roles of a solicitor ?
Interview clients + advise them on a range of issues
Take statements, draft documents + draft letters
Work in solicitor’s offices, Government
What are the “limited rights of audience” for advocacy ?
solicitors are not allowed to present to present cases in court. To present cases in court they train to be a solicitor advocate
How do you become a solicitor advocate ?
Must be a fully qualified solicitor and complete a higher rights of training course which helps them prepare for the assessments needed to obtain higher rights advocacy qualifications
What is the governing body for solicitors ?
The law society is the governing body and represents them.
Who deals with solicitor complaints ?
The solicitor regulatory Authority ( SRA) they will investigate complaints and if there is any evidence of misconduct they will punish
What are the main roles of a barrister?
Focus on advocacy
Present cases in court
Give advise + draft documents for use in court
Who represents barristers ?
The General council of the bar. They set training, the code of conduct and regulate barristers, they can also discipline a barrister if they breach the code.
Who are legal executives ?
They are qualified lawyers and worked in a solicitors firm for at least 5 years. They usually deal with the more straight forward aspects of a solicitors job eg parts of a house transfer
Who represents legal executives ?
All members of the chartered institute of legal executives. They provide training + code of conduct + regulation board investigates complaints and provides punishment
