Define probable cause
Facts or circumstances that would lead a reasonable person to believe that a crime has/is/will be committed. Evidence of that crime exists in a specific location.
3 ways to establish probable cause
- Personal Observation
- Information Obtained from a reliable Informant
- Through use of Detector Dog

Prior to releasing MWD. Dog team must be able to demonstrate proficiency in:
- OUT
- HEEL/STAY
- Standoff
Before commanding a dog to attack you must ensure the following has been completed:
- Identify the same target
- Warning order (HALT, HALT, HALT)
- Warn bystanders to cease movements
- If suspect surrenders, call dog off pursuit
- Regain control of dog if it fails to obey
- Use extreme caution when removing MWD
- Regain/Maintain leash control until dog is calm enough to obey
Do NOT release MWD in these situations:
- Suspect is out of sight (unless authorized)
- Areas where children are present
- Into a crowd
