Federalism
A double-layered system of government, with the national and state governments each exercising important powers.
US Constitution
Supreme law of the land
-national government of the US with three branches
-Creates a system of checks and balances among branches
-Guarantees many basic rights to the American people
Legislative power
Gives Congress the ability to create new laws
Executive power
The authority to enforce laws (President = Head)
Judicial power
The right to interpret laws and determine their validity (Supreme Court)
Statutory Law
Power given to Congress to pass laws on any topic as long as it does not violate the Constitution
Common Law
Law developed through court decisions based on precedent
Court Orders
Place binding obligations on people or companies
Administrative Law
Most government agencies are created by Congress
Criminal Law
Behavior so threatening that society outlaws it altogether (Jail/Crime)
Civil Law
Civil law regulates the rights and duties between parties (Money)

Formal system of rules enacted and enforced by the state
Morality
Set of principles and beliefs about right and wrong
