Battery
The touching of another person without consent
Beneficence
An ethical principle that refers to one’s duty to benefit or promote the good of others.
Christian Ethics
The ethical theory that espouses “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”.
Assault
An act resulting in a person’s genuine fear and apprehension that he or she will be touched without consent.
Torts
A violation of civil law in which an individual has been wronged.
Common Law
Law that is derived from decisions made in previous cases.
Libel
Writing false and malicious information about a person.
Ethical Egoism
An ethical theory that espouses making decisions based on what is most advantageous for the person making the decision.
False Imprisonment
The deliberate and unauthorized confinement of a person within fixed limits by the use of threat or force.
Kantianism
Ethical theory by which decisions are based on a sense of duty.
Malpractice
The failure of a professional to perform or to refrain from performing in a manner in which a reputable member within the profession would be expected to do so.
Natural Law
The theory on which decisions are based in which evil acts are never condoned, even if they are intended to advance the noblest of ends.
Nonmalefiecence
Abstaining from negative acts toward another, including acting carefully to avoid harm.
Slander
Verbalizing false and malicious information about a person.
Statutory Law
Law that has been enacted by legislative bodies.
Utilitarianism
The ethical theory on which decision are based that ensure the greatest happiness to the greatest number of people.
Civil Law
Law that protects the private and property rights of individuals and businesses.
Criminal Law
Provides protection from conduct deemed injurious to the public welfare.
Ethics
The science that deals with the rightness and wrongness of actions or behaviors.
Bioethics
Term applied to ethics within the concept of medicine, nursing, and allied health.
Moral Behavior
Conduct that results from serious critical thinking about how individuals ought to treat others.
Values
Ideals or concepts that give meaning to an individual’s life.
Values Clarification
A process of self exploration through which individuals identify and rank their own personal values.
Right
A valid legally recognized claim or entitlement, encompassing both freedom from government interferences or discriminatory treatment and entitlement to a benefit or service.
Absolute Right
When there is no restriction whatsoever on the individuals entitlement.
Legal Right
A right on which society has agreed and formalized into law.
Autonomy
Emphasized the status of persons autonomous moral agents whose right to determine their destinies should always be respected.
Justice
Based on the notion of a hypothetical social contract between free, equal, and rational persons; concept of justice reflects a duty to treat all individuals equally and fairly.
Veracity
Refers to ones duty to be truthful always.
Model for making ethical decisions
- Assessment
- Problem Identification
- Plan (explore, consider, select)
- Implementation (act on decision)

Pink Sheet
Intent to harm themselves or others. This only gets them to the hospital, doesn’t keep them there.
Blue
- Keeps the patient at the hospital after they are brought in with a pink sheet. Must be filled out by the Dr. once they arrive at the hospital.
- Must be renewed every 72 hours.
- Must remain in patients chart and be communicated
Restraints
Pt must be seen by doctor within 1 hour of restraint.
- If medical, must be checked every 2 hours by nurse. New order needed daily.
- If psych, must be checked every 15 minutes by nurse. New order needed every 4 hrs.
- For peds or mentally disabled: parent or guardian can make decision for them to be held or transferred.
