Left realism(neo-marxism) Flashcards
New criminology-who commites crime
taylor walton and young take a voluntaristic approach seeing crime as a concious deliberate action. -Taylor et al argue working class are politcally motivated and choose to commit utilitarian crime to redistribute wealth from rich to poor. therfore crime is a pro revolutionary action and the w/c commit crime to improve society.
New criminology evaluation
feminists accuse taylor et al of being gender blind ignoring female crime
- taylor et al romanticise w/c criminals and reprsent them as modern day robin hoods whenin fact most crimes is intra class.
- ignore effects on victim
LEFT REALISM-Differences with traditional marxism and new criminology
- left realists are not revolutionaries, they are reformist believing social change can be achieved through legal changes.
- Unlike new criminologists they do not see criminals as revolution heros instead see crime as a social problem that has a negative impact on victims
- arguing there is an aetoligical crisis in-existing theories no longer apply,
Left realism-who commits crime
working class commit crime and theory explains both utilitarian and non utilitarian crimes
Left Realism-lea and young
1.relative deprivation-for Lea and Young the feeling of lacking something in comparison to others has caused crime.
Induviduals feel as if they dont have what they should and turn to crime to obtain it.
-combined with induvidualism leads to crime as people are concerned with themselves at the expense of others..
-induvidualism is causing disintegration of communities and breakdown of social control which leads to anti social behaviour and crime
