left realism and crime Flashcards
what is left realism?
a left-wing, socialist political view.
what is the left realist theory of crime?
Similarly to Marxists, they argue crime is largely the result of the inequality in a capitalist society.
Who do they believe to be the main victims of crime?
disadvantaged groups, such as the working class, ethnic minorities and women
why do they believe crime rates are highest in working-class areas?
due to blocked opportunities leading to high levels of unemployment and deprivation.
Who are the key sociologists for left realism?
Lea and Young
What do you Lea and young argue over three causes of crime?
relative deprivation, marginalisation and sub cultures
what are the two reasons for an increase in individual sense of deprivation?
The media is increasingly urging everyone to aspire to have more material possessions promoting what young calls ‘a culture hooked on Gucci, BMW, Nikes’
Society is becoming more unequal due to cuts in benefits, unemployment, job insecurity and low pay.
Why do individuals feel they are taking what is rightfully theirs by committing crime?
Due to extremely wealthy individuals who are portrayed in the media, such as footballers
what is relative deprivation downwards?
this is the idea that wealthy people have resentment against those who are worse off, as they see them as scroungers. this may explain some hate crimes against powerless groups like asylum seekers or disabled people.
according to left realist what the purpose of a subculture?
to solve the relative deprivation they face. also, some subcultures may turn to crime to solve this disparity.
what are the differences and similarities and beliefs of mainstream society and criminal subcultures?
The similarity is shared goals and the difference is a blocked opportunities which causes individuals to resort to crime
what does crime achieve for individuals in a subculture?
an alternative measure to achieve the material goods individuals desire
what is marginalisation?
when groups lack organisations to represent their interests and do not have clearly defined goals
Why do you such marginalised groups turn to crime?
they turn to crime as they feel a sense of powerlessness and frustration which they express through acts such as rioting.
