what is relative deprivation ?
refers to inequality and the idea that people feel deprived compared to others in society.
what does lea and young argue in terms of relative deprivation?
argued even though society is more prosperous today people are aware of wealth and possessions other people have through media and advertising. if they cannot afford the goods they see others with they may resort to crime

what is being marginalised?
pushed out of society who lack clearly defined goals, involvement and representation in society. those who are marginalised or socially excluded may feel abandoned and frustrated experiences social and political deprivation.
examples of marginalisation ?
groups such as youths have no clear goals to represent them this leads to frustration and resentment which can be expressed through violence and rioting

they believe subcultures are the groups collective solution to the problem of relative deprivation as well as feelings of marginalisation

US ghettos are fully immersed in the American dream even though these goals are legitimately blocked, different groups may produce different subcultural solutions to the problem and some turn to crime to close to deprivation gap
