Leeds is a city in West
Yorkshire in the
North of England.
The population of the
city is 700,000,
making it the third
biggest in the UK by
population.

City challenges
Social: House prices have increased along with
greater house shortages. Health and education
is worse in some areas of the inner city
compared to the suburbs.
Economic: Closure of the textile factories
caused large scale unemployment. In Beeston
and Holbeck, 38% of children live in poverty
and 4.3% of people claim unemployment
benefits.
Environmental: Urban sprawl has led to
increased pressure and decline of greenfield
sites around the city. Dereliction in the city
centre due to deindustrialisation.

Economic: Leeds is the UK’s fastest growing
city which creates job opportunities. Channel 4
have recently relocated 200 jobs to the city.
Environmental: 22% of Leeds is made up of
green space. Key green spaces include
Roundhay Park, Otley Chevin and Temple
Newsham.
