LEED Green Associate Flashcards
Lean Process Improvement
Continuously improving any process through the elimination of waste in every step of manufacturing
LEEP AP
Advanced level of LEED
LEED Green Associate
Basic level of LEED credentials
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
Highly reactive gas produced through the combustion of fossil fuels at generator plants and manufacturing facilities
Triple Bottom Line
accounting framework that incorporates social, environmental, and economic dimensions of an organization
Vertical Farm
Crop grown vertically instead of along the ground. AKA farmscraper
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
Harmful organic chemical compounds that evaporate under normal indoor temperatures and pressure conditions. Released by synthetic building materials.
Xeriscaping
Landscaping designed to reduce or eliminate potable water use in irrigation through native planting and water conservation.
Net Zero Energy
Level of efficiency for a high performance building that produces all of the energy that it uses and is so efficient that a renewable energy source can offset all of most of annual energy consumption
Aeroponics
The process of growing plants in suspension in an air or mist environment without the use of soil
Biogas
Fuel made from decomposing organic matter such as food/animal waste. Fuel is harvested from an anaerobic digester
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Odorless toxic gas produced from vehicle exhaust, appliances, etc.
Greenhouse gases
Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere
LEED
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
Albedo
Metric of reflectivity on a scale of 0 to 1
Aquifer
Body of saturated rock through which water can easily move
Biodiversity
Variety of plants, animals, insects, microorganisms, etc.
Bioswale
Constructed rainwater control feature containing a basin, soil, stone, and vegetation. Designed to reduce runoff and increase groundwater recharge
Building footprint
Area of ground that the building takes up, defined by perimeter.
Dry Pond
Excavated area designed to hold rainwater during a weather event
Ecosystem
Interconnected relationships between organisms, plants, trees, animals, fish, birds, micro-organisms, water, soil, and humans.
Floor-Area-Ratio (FAR)
Density of nonresidential land use. Total building floor area / total buildable land area.
Green Infrastructure
Natural areas that provide habitat, food protection, clean air, clean water. Can also be engineered rainwater management that soaks up and stores water at a neighborhood scale.
