LEDS Flashcards
These are electrons found in the outermost energy level of an atom.
(It has the same value as the group number of an element)
Valence electrons
It refers to the least electronegative atom with the lowest subscript.
Central atom
READ ONLY
Energy level is the same as the period number of an element.
It uses electron dot diagrams to show how electrons are arranged in molecules.
Lewis Electron Dot Structure
It illustrates the number of electron that cation (positively charged atom) can donate or number of electron that anion (negatively charged atom) has to gain to be stable
Lewis Electron Dot Structure
How does a positive atom occur?
When it loses / gives electrons
How does a negative atom occur?
When it gains / receive electron
When can atoms gain stability?
When it follows the octet rule
Who discovered the octet rule?
Gilbert Lewis
What does the octet rule state?
Atoms form bonds until surrounded by eight valence electrons.
It is the lasting attraction between two atoms or molecules that enables formation of bonds.
Chemical bond
It is the transfer of electrons to form a stable state from metal to nonmetal.
Ionic bond
It is the sharing of electrons.
Covalent bond
What are the two types of covalent bond?
Polar covalent compound and nonpolar covalent compound
It refers to the unequal sharing of electrons
Polar covalent compound
