Lectures Slide of the Wrist and Hand Flashcards
What are the two categories of wrist and hand muscles?
What do they mean?
Extrinsic- Origin in the forearm and insertion in the hand
Intrinisic- Origin and insertion both in the hand
How many bones in the wrist and hand?
29
Name all bone number is the wrist and hand?
- Radius and Ulna
- 8 wrist (carpal) bones
- 5 metacarpal bones connect wrist to fingers
- 14 phalanges (3 for each finger/ 2 for thumb)
What is the joint to the wrist joint? What movement occurs?
- Condyloid joint
- Movement occurs mostly between the radius and the proximal row of carpal bones
What are the joints for the finger joints?
- MCP (metacarpophalangeal) joint: condyloid
- PIP (proximal interphalangeal) and DIP (distal iinterphalangeal) joint: ginglymus
What are the joints for the the ithumb joints?
- Carpometacarpal joint (thumb): saddle
- MCP joint: ginglymus
- IP joint: ginglymus
To be all pure the wrist flexors and extensors attach to _________?
-Somewhere on the 2nd to 5th metacarpals
What are the two important tendons?
- Flexor tendon
2. Extensor tendon
What does the fleor tendon attach to?
- Attaches to the medial epicondyle of the humerus
How many muscles attach to the flexor tendon? Name all.
- 5
1. Flexor carpi radialis
2. Palmaris longus
3. Flexor carpi ulnaris
4. Pronator teres
5. Flexor digitorum superficialis
What attaches to the extensor tendon?
- Attaches to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus
How many muscles attaches to the extensor tendon? Name all.
- 4
1. Extensor carpi radialis brevis
2. Extensor digitorum
3. Extensor digiti minimi
4. Extensor carpi ulnaris
Why do the finger muscles insert at the base of the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges?
- Becasue these muscles also cross the wrist and elbow joints they can also move those joints
True of False: can muscles of the hand can ONLY be intrinsic or intrinsic.
False: The muscle of the hand ca be either intrinisc or intrinsic
What does extrinsic and intrinsic mean for the muscles of the hand?
Extrinisic- more GROSS movements
Intrinisc- more FINE movements
Name all the gross movments of the wrsit and hand.
- wrist flexion 2.wrist entension 3. wrist abduction 4. wrist adduction 5. finger and thumb flexion 6. finger and thumb extension 7. abduction of MCP joint and thumb 8. Abduction of MCP joint and thumb
What is a common injury of the wrist and hand?
Carpal tunnel syndrome
What is carpal tunnel?
- A passageway on the palmar side of the wrist through which the median nerve and several tendons travel
Which tendons are associated with Carpal Tunnel?
- Flexor digitorum superficialis
- flexor digitorum profundus
- Fexor pollicis longus
What is cubital tunnel syndrome?
- Refers to the space between the two heads of the flexor carpi ulnaris through which the ulnar nerve passes
- Ulnar nerve can become compressed between these two heads
When having carpal tunnel syndrome what are the parts that feel pain?
- In the hand
- tingling of the thumb
- index fingers
When having cubital itunnel syndrome what are the parts that feel pain?
-tingling in the little and ring fingers
What is texting thumb?
-overuse / irritation oof the flexor pollicis longus
What is Basilar arthritis?
-Arthritis of the saddle joint of the thumb
What is De Quervain’s disease?
- Inflammation of the synovial sheath covering the abductor pollicis longius and extensor pollicis brevis
