Lectures 7-9 Flashcards
How was a Schizophrenia model made in rats and what drugs are used to treat it?
Using amphetamines, a Schizophrenia model can be established in rats.
What are 3 drugs that are used to treat Schizophrenia and how do they work?
Drugs block actions of dopamine:
Chlorpromazine
Haloperidol
Pimozide
How was a Parkinson’s disease model established?
MPTP is taken up by cells where it becomes MPP+.
MPP+ destroys nerves resulting in Parkinson’s disease.
How was a vomiting model established in ferrets and what drugs have been made from the model?
Cisplatin induces vomiting (emesis) in ferrets.
This has been use to develop anti-emetics such as, ondansetron.
How has a Rheumatoid arthritis model been established in rats?
Model is made by injecting Freund’s adjuvant - a mixture of killed M/ tuberculosis and liquid paraffin.
How has a model of myocardial infarction (heart attack) been made in rats?
A heart attack model can be established by tying the coronary artery of an anaesthetised animal.
How has a model of diabetes been made in rats?
Injecting the rat with Streptozotocin will result in the death of the rat’s β-cells
