Lectures 3, 4, 5 - Chapter 3 - Three Resultants of Coplanar Force Systems Flashcards
What is a Resulant?
- The sum of all vectors.
- Also acts as an output, which is also a vector and a force.
What is the Resultant Force?
- The sum of the original forces.
- There are at least two forces, and there can be more involved.
- This Resultant force is also defined, and it created from the sum.
What is the Resultant Force of a Concurrent Coplanar Force Systems?
This sum of original forces derives from the addition/totalling of all forces within the Concurrent Coplanar Force System.
How can the Resultant Force of a Concurrent Coplanar Force System be found
It can be found through:
* the Parallelogram Law
* the Triangle Law
* the Method of Components
What is an Orthogonal Force?
What does Collinear mean?
What happens when you have the effect of two components?
- When two components are acting together, it is the same effect caused by the original force.
- Two components that are usually orthogonal, at right angles to one another
- Usually colinear
What is the Magnitude of the moment?
- Product of the Force and Moment Arm
- M(force) = F x M(arm)
What is the Moment Arm? This is needed in order to calculate the magnitude of the Moment.
The Moment Arm is the perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the Moment Center.
What is the Moment Center?
What does the word, Perpendicular indicate in Statics, when it comes to solving Coplanar Force Systems?
What Direction of the Moment is positive?
Counterclockwise rotation indicates Positive Direction for the moment
CCW = (+)
What Direction of the Moment is negative?
Clockwise rotation indicates Negative Direction for the moment
CW = (+)
What is Varginon’s Theorem?
The algebraic sum of the moments of the componets of a force system is equal to the moment of the resultant force system.
(Algebraic Sum of Moments of Components of a Force System) = (Moment of Resultant Force System)
What is a Parallel Force System?
- All the force’s lines of action are Parallel
- No diagonal lines
