Lectures 2-5 Cowen Flashcards

Q

What four parts make up the orbital wall? (Address is 2234. 2 walls have 2 bones, 1 wall with 3, 1 with 4 bones)

What are the foramen and fissures? (3)

What’s the most important frontal bone?

Are the fissures and foramen the weakest part of the orbit?

What’s the weakest part of the orbit? What could happen if this part gets depressed?

A

Orbital roof, lateral wall, orbital floor, medial wall

Anterior orbit, mid orbit, orbital apex

Superior orbital fissure

YES, disease can enter here as well as trauma

Floor of the orbit. The inferior rectus could get trapped below the orbital floor

    - Levator palpebrae
    - Superior/inferior oblique
  2. Thyroid eye disease usually starts with what muscle?
  3. What are common signs of thyroid disease regarding the eye?
A
  1. EOMs:
    - Elevates eyelid
    - Torsion

Q

What do these ligaments do?

  1. Medial canthal ligament
  2. Lateral canthal ligament
  3. Orbital septum
A

1 and 2 both help open and close the eyes, keep eyes stable. When stressed, causes eyelids to collapse on cornea.

  1. Helps with opening and closing the eyes, can have problems with inflammation.

Q

Vasculature

Each vessel originates where?

Veins originate?

Vein most common for infection/ophthalmic problems?

Retrograde movement of infection to cavernous sinus can be caused by what?

A

Apex of orbit

Cavernous sinus

Superior ophthalmic vein

Squeezing a cist could cause this to shoot backwards

What happens with Bells Palsy?

What do protractor muscles do?

Excretory system:

Why is the puncta important?

What’s the weakest part of the eyelid?

A

Problem with CN:VII that doesn’t allow protractor muscles to work

Cause the eye to close

Needs to be positioned perfectly so the tears can come into it from the lacrimal gland
