Lecture XVI - Nervous System 1 Flashcards
What is a Nerve net?
-a diffuse network of neurons
-may include ganglia
-ganglion: a cluster of neurons
Central nervous system includes?
-Brain: anteriormost cluster or neurons
-Nerve cord: prominent longitudinally extending condensed part of CNS
-Nerve cord may include ganglia
Peripheral nervous system includes?
-Nerves and ganglia outside the CNS
-Connects muscles, organs, and sensory cells to the CNS
The origin of nervous systems
- The ancestor of animals did not have a nervous system
- Nerve nets evolved first after sponges
- CNS evolved from nerve nets
- CNS evolved between 1 and 9 times
- All animals with a CNS also have a PNS
Neuron
Three parts
1. Dendrites
2. Cell body
3. Axon
Dendrites
-Highly branched group of relatively short projections
-Receive signals from other axons of other neurons
-Send signals to cell body
Cell body
-Houses nucleus
-Receives signals from dendrites or axons from other neurons
-Sends a response signal to the axon
Axon
-One or more long projections
-Receives signals form cell body
-Sends signals to the dendrites and cell bodies of other neurons
Synapse
-Where axons from one neuron meet dendrites or a cell body of a different neuron
-Where signaling between neurons takes place
Which of these choices is a possible direction of information flow within a neuron?
dendrite → cell body → axon
Types of neurons
- Sensory neuron
- Motor neuron
- Interneuron
Sensory neuron
-Part of the PNS
-Carry sensory information to the CNS
-Bundled together into Nerves
Interneuron
-Part of the CNS
-Receive signal from sensory neuron
-Send signal to motor neuron
Motor neuron
-Part of the PNS
-Receive signal from interneuron
-Send signal to muscle cell
-Bundled together into nerves
Real life Frankenstein
Giovanni Aldini (Italiian scientist; 19th century):
studied galvanism - bioelectricity
experimented on animal corpses
Thought to have influenced Mary Shelley
