Intro to the unit
What is health?
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. It is not just the absence of disease.
What is disease?
Any harmful deviation from the normal structural/functional state of an organism. Disease is usually associated with certain symptoms which are different in nature from a physical injury.
What is the study of physiology?
Understanding how body systems and processes work under normal healthy conditions
Homeostasis
the regulation of the body’s internal environment to be at a constant state.
Examples of things controlled by homeostasis
- body temp
- body pH
- blood pressure
- heart rate
- blood sugar
- ion balance
Homeostasis means to be…
healthy
Loss of homeostasis results in …
disease
ways diseases are classified (4 types)
- temporal- time frame of disease
- Aetiology based- what causes the disease (infections, autoimmune, genetic)
- Anatomical- where the disease occurs
- Morphological- tumours, cysts, etc.
Pharmacology=
the study of the uses, effects and modes of actions of drugs.
Pathophysiology=
the study of the structural and functions; changes in cells, tissues and organs during disease.
how will understanding health and disease aid patient care in pharmacy?
able to communicate what is going on with the patients and highlight the importance of lifestyle choices to them.
