Lecture twenty Flashcards
What brings about Intraspecific competition?
A shared requirement for a resource in limited supply
Intraspecific competition
Interaction between individuals of the same species
What is interspecific competition?
An interaction between individuals of a different species
Is there a negative or positive effect on both species due to interspecific competition?
Negative effect, each species contributes to the regulation of the other population as well as it’s own. Reduces growth, reproduction and survival
What are the three components of the niche concept?
Fundamental, realized, overlap
What is a fundamental niche?
Full range of conditions/resources used by a species to survive and reproduce
What is a realized niche?
Portion of the fundamental niche a species actually exploits as a result of competition
What is a niche overlap?
When two or more species use a portion of the same resource simultaneously
What are the three possible outcomes of competition when a new species is introduced to an area where a species already exists?
Coexistence without competition
Coexistence with competition
One species in eliminates
What does coexistence with competition result in?
Reduction in one or both populations
What is asymmetrical competition?
One species is more strongly affected than the other
What is a competitively dominant species?
Species least affected by competition
What is resource partitioning?
Each species uses a part of the same resource
What is the competitive exclusion principle?
Two species that have the same resource requirements cannot coexist when resources are scarce
What is the evidence for competitive exclusion principle in plants?
Root and shoot competition
