Lecture One Flashcards
What is voice?
The sound produced by the vibration of the vocal folds.
What are the 3 parameters of voice?
- pitch
- loudness
- quality
* age and gender affect voice the most.
What needs to be intact for a healthy voice?
respiratory , phonatory, resonatory, and neurological systems.
What is the primary function of the larynx?
To protect the airway
4 aspects of normal development and changes in the voice
- growth and changes in vocal fold length
- development of cricothryoid and thyroarytenoid muscles
- changing structure of vocal fold tissues
- ossification of cartilage in larynx
Changes in the voice
puberty, old age, ossification, reduced flexibility in pitch + loudness, atrophy (complete loss of muscle mass) dystrophy (partial loss), edema, and menopause.
Most basic elements of the respiratory system
lungs, ribcage, diaphragm/abdominal unit
Tidal volume
the volume of air inhaled or exhaled during a normal inhale or exhale
Inspiratory reserve volume
amount of air inhaled after an inhale of normal tidal volume
Expiratory reserve volume
amount of air forcefully expired after exhaling of normal tidal volume.
Residual volume
remaining volume of air in respiratory passages and lungs after the most forceful exhale.
Inspiratory capacity
tidal volume plus inspiratory reserve
Functional residual capacity
expiratory reserve plus residual
Vital capacity
sum of inspiratory reserve, tidal volume and expiratory reserve
Total lung capacity
sum of inspiratory, expiratory reserve plus tidal volume and residual volume
