Lecture One Flashcards
Physical Activity and Physical Fitness
What is Physical Activity
Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles
that requires energy expenditure.
Whats the difference between Physical Activity and Exercise
All exercise is physical activity, but not all physical activity is exercise
What is Exercise?
A type of physical activity consisting of planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movement done to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness.
What is a MET?
METS describe the absolute intensity of a variety of physical activities
1 MET IS EQUAL TO
1 MET = 3.5 ml O2/kg/min (the amount of oxygen consumed while sitting at rest
What is Physical Fitness?
Ability to carry out daily tasks with vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with ample energy to enjoy leisure-time pursuits and meet unforeseen emergencies.
How does physical activity differ from physical fitness?
PA = Behavior; PF = capacity
Physical fitness is accomplished by performing physical activity
Health Related Components of Physical Fitness
Cardiorespiratory Endurance, Muscular strength, Muscular Endurance. Flexibility, Body Composition
What is Cardiorespiratory Endurance
The ability to perform prolonged, large-muscle, dynamic exercise at moderate to high levels of intensity (due to the ability of the circulatory and respiratory system to supply oxygen during sustained physical activity)
Skill Related Components of Physical Fitness
Speed, Power, Agility, Balance, Coordination, Reaction Time
Adults should do how many minutes of physical activity?
Adults should do at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes to 150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity
