LECTURE NOT FIRST AID - Embryology of Endocrine Flashcards
Much better embryology material from first aid cards. This deck has some hit points for easy question recognition, using the lecture as a guideline.
What does the ultimobranchial body lead to?
Gives rise to the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland
What is Rathke’s pouch?
An ectodermal out-pocketing of the primitive oral cavity
What is the infundibulum?
A downward extension of the diencephalon
What week do the kidneys come in contact with the suprarenals?
9th week
In regards to the suprarenal glands, what tissue types give rise to the cortex and medulla?
Cortex - Mesoderm
Medulla - Ectoderm (Neural crest)
Discuss the developmental changes of the suprarenal cortex
During development of the suprarenal gland, a fetal cortex is formed first followed by formation of the definitive cortex.
The fetal cortex is functional until about the 2nd post-natal month at which time it regresses. The remaining definitive cortex becomes organized into the three layers seen in the adult.
3 layers of the adult suprarenal cortex
Z. Glomerulosa
Z. fasciculata
Z. reticularis - From the fetal cortex!
What cells in the testis make testosterone?
Leydig cells
What do Sertoli Cells make? Where are these cells?
These cells are in the testes and secrete Mullerian-inhibiting factor (MIF) and inhibins and act liek nurse cells for sperm.
What cells in the ovary make estrogen?
Follicular cells
What cells in the ovary make progesterone?
Luteal cells.
There are three parts to the adult pituitary. What are they and what are their embryologic origins?
Anterior - Ectoderm, primitive oral cavity, Rathke’s pouch
Intermediate - Ectoderm, primitive oral cavity, Rathke’s pouch
Posterior - Ectoderm, neural tube
What is the embryologic origin of the pineal gland?
Ectoderm, neural tube
What is the embryological origin of the Thyroid cells?
Follicular cells - Endoderm, foramen cecum
Parafollicular cells - Neural crest, ultimobranchial body
